South Carolina Pitcher Matt Campbell Earns National Player Of The Week Honors

Feb. 24, 2003

Columbia, S.C. - South Carolina sophomore LHP Matt Campbell has earned Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors as voted by Collegiate Baseball. In addition to his national honor, Campbell was also named SEC Pitcher of the Week following his near no-hitter in Sunday's 9-0 win vs. Duquesne.

Campbell earned his first win of the season as he held Duquesne hitless into the eighth inning of Sunday's victory. A bloop single by Scott Maiolo spoiled the no-hitter. Campbell finished with a career-high nine strikeouts as he and senior Steven Bondurant combined for the first shutout by Carolina this season. In addition to his win vs. Duquesne, Campbell also earned his first career save at The Citadel on Wednesday in a 7-5 win for USC. Campbell pitched the final 1 1/3 innings striking out five batters in the Gamecock's first road game of the year.

South Carolina is ranked No. 6 in the nation this week by Collegiate Baseball, up one spot from last week's poll. South Carolina and Clemson renew the in-state rivalry this week with a pair of games. Saturday's contest at Clemson will begin at 1 p.m. with Sunday's game at Sarge Frye Field in Columbia at 1:30 p.m.
