South Carolina vs. Wofford - Game 2
South Carolina Head Coach Ray Tanner
"We're delighted to win this first game today. I had tremendous anticipation for this game. It was one of the longest days in my coaching career because Wofford has been on such a roll lately. I was analyzing, looking at numbers and looking at statistics all day. There were a couple of factors that I thought were big tonight. One was when Justin [Smoak] answered in the first to get a run on the board and tie it up. Our pitching staff only gave up five hits against a really good offensive team. When they start going double digits on you with a couple of homeruns, they're tough to beat."
"We walked five or six, which was too many. He punched out some guys in key situations and made them roll into some double plays. He's close to being where he was in the first half of the season. He's an inning away from really settling in and making it tough for hitters. He has a good change-up and has a fastball in the upper 80s. He battled hard for us today. They got some runners on, but were able to pitch out of it."
"I was very impressed. Obviously Mills was fantastic. They are a very good club and one that got their 48th win today which is impressive. They're a good club, no doubt about it."
Justin Smoak, First Baseman
On his homerun...
"The first homerun was a fastball on the inside and the second was a slider. I hit some balls hard in the tournament, but it's good to be back at the Sarge in front of the fans. Luckily, I got a couple of good pitches."
On the game...
Reese Havens, Shortstop
On the double...
"We hit some balls hard tonight. Harris pitched a great game and gave us a chance to win. Some of the other guys gave us good at bats at good times."
"I just tried to do the job and get some runners in. I got a pitch to work with and hit it down the line. I think anytime you get a hit in clutch situation it gets the team going."
On the pitching...
"Pitching was great tonight. Harris always gives us a chance to win the ball game and he did that again tonight for us. You have to tip your cap to him.
Harris Honeycutt, Pitcher
On getting the win to start the regional...
"It's good to start the regional on the right foot. Hopefully it will set the tone for the weekend."
On struggling in the past, but pitching well tonight...
"It's the same game no matter who you are playing or what happened in the past. You have to be yourself."
What pitch was working for you tonight?
"The fastball and the change-up. I was on sometimes and sometimes not."
At what point did you feel like you would win the game?
"It's not like that. I have confidence in the hitters so I wasn't thinking about that - it defiantly helps to know we can hit the ball. We hit it pretty good tonight."
On playing again at Sarge Frye:
"It's always good to play at home. The fans here are so good, so loyal."
