Head Coach Chad Holbrook Opening Statement… I thought we played a real clean game and it started on the mound with Jordan (Montgomery). He was very efficient. It was a really big game for us to get off on a very good note this weekend, obviously these games are really important. Jordan set the tone for us on the mound and I think we were really good offensively against a really good arm. (Brett) Graves has an electric arm and he is going to be a high draft pick for a reason. We really had some good at-bats against him and that 4th and 5th inning was two of our better innings of the year. Good win for us. We played good defense behind Jordan, for the most part, as well. It was a good way for us to start the weekend off.
On Joey Pankake being able to have a good performance while playing through being sick… Joey is as sick as a dog and he’s currently getting an IV. He’s a tough nut and a tough kid. I didn’t really want to play him, I wanted to play him, but I just didn’t think he was going to be able to play. He’s a baseball player, though. He got in there and got some energy and he got lost in the game a little bit. He started feeling better because he stopped thinking about how sick he was. He started thinking about winning the game and he got some big hits against a big arm.
On Jordan Montgomery’s performance tonight and how he seems to pitch his best at the end of the year... It’s that time of the year, maybe. Most pitchers feel better when it’s warm (outside). He’s a horse. He doesn’t get tired and he gets better as the game goes on, he a knack for that. He held his velocity throughout the whole game and that was an impressive performance. He has all pitches working. He threw four pitches in there and it’s tough to hit the ball when you know one pitch is coming in there, but when he is throwing all four for strikes, he is very, very difficult. He’s a good pitcher and I think he is a good pitcher in February too. It’s really neat to see the way he is throwing. I think that’s now five or six quality starts in a row for him and he’s been pitching very, very well on Friday night. Sometimes we don’t give him much support on Friday night, but tonight we did.
Sophomore Infielder Max Schrock On being back in the lineup and contributing… It feels great to be back. I felt very comfortable today, hopefully that was a good sign of getting back in the swing of things and continuing to progress as we move forward.
On how his back feels… Today I was a little bit more active. It was a little sore but I will be fine. It is natural as I am getting back in the swing of things. Hopefully it feels good tomorrow.
On playing with a sense of urgency down the stretch… I feel like our last win, we put up 15 runs and we carried that in to today with our offense. Hopefully we can keep riding that momentum as we move forward.
Junior LHP Jordan Montgomery On how he felt with run support… Definintely when they put together the string of hits especially Gene Cone’s bases loaded double. It was nice having a cushion and knowing I could just go out there and pitch and keep them off the bases and let the defense work. I was just trying to eat up innings.
On his recent success… Consistently doing the same thing. Getting my mechanics, muscle memory and figuring it all out has been
