South Carolina Post Game Quotes Vs. Auburn
April 30, 2011
Head Coach Ray Tanner
Great win for us tonight; being able to score ten runs, we don't do that a whole lot. I really felt that there were two things in the game that came up big and one was Colby. I think in the second, third, and fourth, the leadoff guy got on; he was teetering a little bit but then he settled in and had three good frames after that and we were able to have that six run seventh. We pushed across some runs and were pretty aggressive on the bases, which got us in trouble a couple of times but we were able to get a couple of runs because we were aggressive.
On losing last two Saturday games and considering changing pitchers...
No not really. Colby had a pretty good game last Saturday; he gave us a quality outing and gave us a chance to win. We weren't thinking about going in a different direction, those guys have battled hard for us. I know [Forrest] Koumas didn't have a good one last Sunday but he'll be sharp tomorrow. Those guys picked us up when we were thin. As you know they started in the bullpen, but those guys are pitching. They've got a chance to be on the weekend and they've taken advantage of that opportunity.
On getting a big lead and not going to John Taylor...
Well that was good, but we were getting close to going to Taylor again. John Taylor has been resilient, he's been effective, and so we've got to put him in key opportunities if they are there. It was nice to let him catch his breath a little bit, and Matt Price as well. I thought [Tyler] Webb was sharp.
On winning weekend series...
Honestly, I don't get too far ahead of anything, I never have. I worry about today and I don't think about standings, I was watching the Georgia-Arkansas game today and they were putting up scenarios and the standings, and that's foreign to me. I don't go there, its just things you can't control and I just don't allow myself to get in that situation. With our injuries you could make excuses and try to figure it all out but you can't do it anyway. Honestly, I just try to play today and try to make the most of it, be prepared as much as we can be and live with the results.
On Colby's performance...
I think that he might have been missing a little bit in the zone. His fastball was pretty good tonight, they put some pretty good swings on some of his fastballs but he threw a slider for strikes at times, a curveball and a changeup. You got four pitches going, you've got a chance for a hitter to have to make about four pitches. He was able to get some swings and misses in key situations. I thought a key situation was when we walked the shortstop early in the game, which I don't do that very often but [Casey] McElroy is really good. Colby is a four-pitch guy and was able to make a hitter think about them.
Centerfielder, Evan Marzilli
On the big inning...
It seems like sometimes we always have these big innings, where the coaches will get us a little pumped up, and I think tonight was one of those. We started to catch fire and everyone had the bat hot a little bit.
Leftfielder, Jake Williams
On tough catches...
On the last one I was there and I went up to try and catch it and my body went up against the wall and my arm went in with my body against the wall so I couldn't get my arm up. I was pretty close, I thought I was going to be able to get it but my arm kind of got caught up in my own body.
Pitcher, Colby Holmes
On settling in the middle...
I had a slow start in the beginning and I had a rough third. [Coach Meyer] came out and told me to trust my stuff and just throw strikes.
