Player Quotes

2B Erik Payne
On starting at second base all three games this weekend...
I was actually pretty surprised. They told me on Thursday to take some ground balls over there. I didn't expect them to put me in there the next night. Right now I'm just trying to take it day-by-day and see how it goes.

On going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBIs...
The more at bats you get the more comfortable you are going to get, so I think it's helped some having consecutive days in there and just seeing the baseball.

DH Kyle Martin
On Princeton shifting the infield during his at bats...
I go up there to pull the ball for doubles and home runs, but if you are going to put a shift on, obviously, any batter is going to be expected to go the other way. That's about all I'm going to try to do. Just go to the six-hole.

RHP Colby Holmes
On pitching through several tough situations...
I came out today with the fastballs up and got hit around a little bit, but I have a lot of confidence in the guys behind me. I just throw strikes and let them hit it, and (the defense) will be behind me no matter what happens.

On how he feels he has pitched through four starts this season...
I'm not exactly where I need to be. It's a long season, and we are just getting started. The big thing is if you get off to a rough start you just have to battle through it and work hard.

Head Coach Ray Tanner
Opening statement...
It was a great weekend for us. We played a team that we knew was going to be very good coming in here. They could pitch, play defense and have some good hitters in there as well. Our pitching staff did a tremendous job on the weekend. They had a bunch of strikeouts and very few walks against a team that we fully expect will be a postseason team at the end of the year. I'm very happy with the success we had by winning three games. At times I know we get a little impatient offensively, but today with (starting pitcher Matt) Bowman out there for Princeton, he was very good. That young man can pitch. It was one of those days where I wasn't to upset with the hitters because it was tough to get hacks. He did a tremendous job keeping us off the board.

On second baseman Erik Payne's big day at the plate...
He did a pretty good job. We certainly needed everything he did today, with the double and the home run. He's a kid that has worked extremely hard since he's been in the program. Quite honestly there were a couple of points last year that were really difficult for him. Although he wasn't playing, it seemed like he had some tough practices and he was getting frustrated a little bit, but he kept grinding it out. Guys that do that sometimes surface. He never went away. He's much more physical now and has a different body than he did a year ago. I threw him in there because I thought he was the right kind of person.
