COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina pounded out 16 hits Sunday, three each by Steven Tolleson and Cory Vanderhook plus a home run by Brendan Winn, to defeat Longwood 13-3 and complete a sweep of a three game college baseball series. The Gamecocks improved to 3-0 while Longwood's record dropped to 1-7. South Carolina's next action will be a three game series with Radford University beginning Friday at Sarge Frye Field.

Forrest Beverly, seeing his first action in nearly two years due to arm surgery, pitched four innings and left with an 8-3 lead but did not go the required five innings to get the win. Freshman Wynn Pelzer pitched two hitless innings, walked one and struck out two, to notch his first collegiate win. Three other Gamecocks pitched one hitless inning apiece.

Beverly allowed eight hits and three runs, two of them earned. Isaac Wiederman, 0-2, the first of four Longwood pitchers, was charged with the loss. In 1 2/3 innings he gave up seven hits, eight runs, five earned.

South Carolina jumped out to an 8-0 lead with four runs in each of the first two innings. Tolleson drove in the first of his three RBI, Ryan Mahoney had a two run double and Cory Vanderhook doubled in the fourth run of the first inning. Tolleson doubled in a run and Winn it a two run homer, his first of the season, to highlight the second inning.

South Carolina added three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the seventh to complete its scoring.

Longwood scored one in the third on singles by Tyler Ames, Corey Huemmer and Chris Balus and added two runs in the fourth inning. Tyler Childress walked, the first base on balls by the South Carolina pitching staff after 21 innings. Nick Von Gersdorff singled. Both runners advanced on a bunt. Childress scored on an infield hit by Brett Mooney and Von Gersdorff crossed on a Gamecock error.

 

 

Davy Gregg, Michael Campbell and Mahoney had two hits apiece for South Carolina. Ames and Mooney had two hits for Longwood. The only Lancer extra base hit was a first inning double by Mooney. Tolleson, Mahoney, Vanderhook and Ian Paxton registered doubles for the Gamecocks.
