BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — University of South Carolina track & field student-athletes Ryan Bermudez and Maya Evans were named to the 2017 SEC Community Service Team, the league announced Thursday.

Bermudez, a senior from Miami, Fla., was active throughout the Columbia area during the 2016-17 academic year. He volunteered at Hand Middle School’s field day event and led a sports clinic at Hammond School. He also helped his fellow Carolina students move into their dormitories and volunteered at both Harvest for Hope Food Bank and Ronald McDonald House.

Evans is a four-time SEC Community Service Team honoree and was named the conference’s Brad Davis Community Service Leader of the Year for the 2016-17 academic year. The Wilson, N.C., native has volunteered over 700 hours of community service during her collegiate career, including a summer mission trip tutoring underprivileged children in Costa Rica and regular service at the Wesley Shelter for Domestic Violence in her hometown. Evans has served her fellow Carolina students as both a Diversity Peer Educator and the Community Service Chair of the Multicultural Student Outreach Team, and she led the United Way’s Midlands Reading Consortium.

Bermudez will represent the Gamecocks at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, to be held June 7-10 in Eugene, Ore. The senior will run as part of the men’s 4x100m relay team, one of 10 entries the Gamecocks will field in Eugene.
