COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina senior sprinter Lakya Brookins has been named the SEC Runner of the Week after running the second-fastest wind-legal time in the world in the 100-meter dash, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Brookins ran the nation's top wind-legal time in the 100-meter dash to take the win at the War Eagle Invitational. Her run of 11.10 (+0.1) bested her previous personal best by one-tenth of a second and moves her to No. 2 in the South Carolina record books, surpassing times set by a former Olympian in Aleen Bailey and former NCAA Champions in Amberly Nesbitt and Erica Whipple. Her time is also the No. 2 wind-legal time run in the world this year. She also ran leadoff for the 4x100m relay team that took second overall at 44.85.
She is the fifth Gamecock to be honored by the SEC this year and the third of the outdoor season. During the indoor season, Sanura Eley-O'Reilly was named SEC Freshman of the Week once, and Brookins was named SEC Runner of the Week twice. In the outdoor season, Jeannelle Scheper earned SEC Field Athlete of the Week honors once and Shayla Mahan earned SEC Runner of the Week honors.
South Carolina is off this week before traveling to the Penn Relays next weekend.
