Feb. 11, 2014
NEW ORLEANS - The South Carolina women's track and field team climbed one spot to No. 14 in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I National Team Computer Rankings released on Tuesday.
The Gamecocks are coming off a third-place finish in their first scored meet of the season at the Armory Collegiate Invitational. The New York City meet was dubbed the USTFCCCA's National Meet of the Week.
Senior high jumper Jeannelle Scheper won the championship high jump division at meet-record height and was awarded the Evelyn Lawler Lewis Award as the meet's outstanding female competitor. Scheper is the current high jump national leader. South Carolina also swept the 4x200-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay championships.
As they have all season, the SEC leads the nation with eight teams in the women's rankings.
The national team rankings will be complied by mathematical formulae based on national descending order lists and data taken from previous seasons. For the preseason ranking and early-season rankings, data will be taken from previous seasons as well as the current season. This is the final week with preseason data included.
The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national team race. Rankings points do not equate with NCAA Championships team points.
The Gamecocks take on several SEC foes this weekend at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
