DES MOINES, Iowa - Rising sophomore Tyler Brockington concluded South Carolina's week at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a fourth-place finish in 400-meter hurdle finals at Drake Stadium.
Brockington, an NCAA qualifier in the event, got out well and was leading the pack for most of the race. After recovering from a stumble, she clocked in at 58.83 to finish fourth.
"It's been a good season and she got fourth in her race here. She did a really great job. Her effort was great. She was leading after 300 meters and had a stutter-step but was able to finish," noted South Carolina head coach Curtis Frye.
"It has been a good year for her. We just hope it leads to another good year next year. We are glad to have her back and see how good she can be. This was a great experience for her."
With Brockington's result, the Gamecocks return home with three top-eight finishes from a trio of rising sophomores. Alexis Murphy (200 meters) and Lisa Zimmer (800 meters) both finished in seventh place in their respective finals.
The USA Outdoor Track & Field Senior Championships are also being held at Drake Stadium this week with the event serving as qualification for the 14th IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Moscow, Russia, Aug. 10-18, 2013. The top three finishers in each event at the USA Outdoor Championships move on to represent the US, provided they have reached the A standard.
Frye and assistant head coach Delethea Quarles were appointed as Team USA assistant coaches for IAAF World Championships and are in Iowa for Team USA duties in addition to overseeing the Gamecocks in the junior championships.
