South Carolina Posts 13 Wins at State USATF Meet

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The South Carolina track and field teams posted 13 wins Wednesday at the USATF State Meet held at the Weems Baskin Track Facility. Michael Zajac and Booker Nunley hit regional qualifying marks to pace the sixth-ranked Gamecock men's team.
Zajac, an indoor All-American in the weight throw, won the men's hammer throw at 196-09 (59.96m) for his fourth qualifying mark in as many meets. Nunley took second in the men's 110-meter hurdles at a season best 13.90 to round out the qualifying times.
Senior David Zaycek was the big winner of the night with victories in the men's shot put and discus throw. Zaycek threw a season best 157-00 (47.85m) to win the discus before following it up with a toss of 49-11.25 (15.22m) to win the shot put.
Other winners for the men include Matt Shuler in the pole vault (15-01.00 // 4.60m), Daniel Smoak in the 5,000-meter run (15:36.18) and Johnny Dutch in the 800-meter dash (1:59.07).
The Gamecock women posted seven wins with a strong day in field events. Sophomore Kayla Blake cleared a season best 5-05.00 (1.65m) to win the high jump. A pair of freshman won throwing events as Katie Vuckovich won the shot put at 44-07.00 (13.59m) and Shantelle Patterson won the hammer throw at 147-10 (45.06m). Aimee Kodat followed with a win in the discus throw at 148-07 (45.28m). Vica Shobe won the women's pole vault with a clearance of 11-11.75 (3.65m).
In women's sprints, Breehana Jacobs won the 400m dash at 56.82 seconds and SEC Indoor Freshman Runner of the Year Nadonnia Rodrigues opened her outdoor season with a win in the 800m dash at 2:21.53.
South Carolina heads to Athens, Ga., this weekend to compete at the Spec Towns Relays on the campus of the University of Georgia.
