Martin, Hilliard Improve NCAA Hopes at Last Chance Meet
March 3, 2007
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Select members of South Carolina's men's and women's track and field teams competed at an NCAA Last Chance Meet in Blacksburg, Va., on Saturday. Chiquita Martin improved her time in the 55-meter hurdles by running 7.76 to finish third in the finals. Thomas Hilliard, IV, from the men's team also improved his time in the 55m hurdles by one-hundredth of a second with a 7.23 run in the finals, good for first place. Hilliard is just sixth-hundredths of a second from automatic qualification for next week's NCAA Indoor Championships. In the pole vault, Dan McKenzie equaled his PR with a 17-0 3/4 clearance, the minimum provisional standard. Sallie Gurganus was unable to reach the women's provisional mark of 12-11 1/2, however, the freshman did improve her career-best in the event by over eight inches by jumping 12-8 1/4. It ranks as the No. 2 figure in South Carolina history behind 2006 All-American Cheryl Terrio. Brittney James had her best showing of the season in the long jump with a leap of 20-2 1/2, enough for provisional qualification. The final list of participants for the NCAA Championships will be posted by 8 p.m. on the NCAA's Web site. Arkansas is hosting the event over March 9-10.
