Smith Improves 400m Time at NCAA Last Chance Meet

AMES, Iowa -- Stephanie Smith of the South Carolina track and field team improved her time in the 400-meter dash by .14 seconds at an NCAA Last Chance Meet in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday. The senior ran 53.33 to finish second in the event and up her chances of qualifying for next week's NCAA Indoor Championships.

	Faraign Giles from the women's squad also ran in the quarter mile, posting a time of 54.86 to place 10th. Keith Hinnant, Ray Miley and Jonathan Fortenberry ran the 400 on the men's side and finished fourth, fifth and 10th with times of 47.16, 47.18 and 48.72. Hinnant and Miley's times were both NCAA provisional figures.

	The final list of participants for the NCAA Championships will be posted by 8 p.m. on the NCAA's Web site. Arkansas is hosting the event over March 9-10.
