Indoor Meet #2 - Track & Field at the Clemson Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. -- The South Carolina track & field team was back in action Friday at the Clemson Invitational, with four Gamecocks finishing on the podium at one of the toughest tests of the indoor regular season. Jordan Fields, Yann Randrianasolo, Ncincilili Titi and KD Young each posted a top-three finish to start the weekend in the Upstate.
Fields (high jump and pentathlon), Randrianasolo (long jump), Titi (60m) and Young (shot put) each set a PR on Friday and made a mark on Carolina's indoor record book, while Allie Mueller (mile run) also continued her climb up the program's all-time top-10.
The day started with the multi events, including Fields competing in her first pentathlon of the season. The sophomore was fantastic, recording the fifth-best pentathlon score in Gamecock history, at 3,967 points. She finished just 232 points behind Florida's Amanda Froeynes, and she became just the second Gamecock in history to post an indoor high jump over six feet with her mark of 6-0 ¾. Fields' total of 3,967 ranks fourth nationally through Friday's competition.
Young continued to make her mark early in her collegiate career. One week after recording the 10th-best shot put effort in Gamecock history in her debut meet, the freshman launched another season-best, finishing second on Friday with a toss of 51-11. That's the eighth-best tally in Carolina history and the 23rd-best mark in the nation so far this season.
On the men's side, Randrianasolo upped his personal best in the long jump, hitting 24-11 to top his previous PR by one inch and finish third individually at Clemson. The Toulouse, France, native still holds the fifth-best indoor long jump in the Carolina record books, and he is listed eighth on the NCAA's 2018 leaderboard after Friday's performance.
Titi is set to make his 200m season debut on Saturday, but he wowed the crowd Friday night with two electrifying 60m runs. In prelims, the senior set a new PR and ran the seventh-fastest time in school history at 6.70. That punched his ticket to the finals, where his 6.79 was another new best and ranked just behind the Georgia duo of Kendal Williams (6.67) and Cejhae Greene (6.68). The time is also listed 12th nationally this season.
Carolina is four events into the heptathlon competition. Competing unattached, Markus Leemet holds fourth place with 2,921 points. One spot back is Simon Gyllensten, with 2,730 points. The final three events will be held Saturday morning.
FROM THE COACH
"Jordan was really strong in the high jump, and she's having a great season overall through just two weeks. We're tickled with her performance so far, a PR last week and more good stuff today. She's doing what we expected from her when we recruited her, and she's got a chance to accomplish some special things. KD was close to her overall PR, and anytime you're close to your personal best that's great. She also beat some people with some good college experience. Rougui keeps moving up, and as she rounds into form she's going to be a factor in the NCAA meet."
"Titi set two PRs today in the 60, and we're excited to see what he's accomplishing this early in the season. This is a good track, the same one we're getting in our new indoor facility, and the surface has some bounce along with wide curves. It creates some fast times, and we want to see another one of those tomorrow in the 200."
"Yann also had a good night, and Simon got off to a great start, especially in the jumps. Tomorrow he's got two of his stronger events, and he's starting to look like someone who could score at SECs if he continues to get better. I'm excited to see our team tomorrow, especially Titi running his first 200 of the season, Hanifah Abdulqadir jumping for the second time and Otis Jones making his season debut in the 800."-- Head Coach Curtis Frye
