Vincent Finishes 12th in 3-Meter World Championships Finals

BUDAPEST, Hungary - South Carolina diver Julia Vincent competed in the 3-meter finals at the 2017 FINA World Championships on Friday in Budapest, Hungary. The Gauteng, South Africa, native finished 12th overall in the event, capping a World Championships in which she became the first South African in history to advance to the final round at a world diving championships.

After finishing with a 289.65 five-dive score in the semifinals, Vincent advanced with the top-12 divers to the finals on Friday. Vincent started out the competition strong with a 63.00 on her forward 2-½-somersault 1-twist pike, putting her in eighth place. Her second dive earned her next-highest score of the competition with a 58.90.

Vincent completed three more dives for scores of 57.00, 39.00 and 48.00 to combine for her final score of 265.90 in the World Championships finals.

Earlier in the week, Vincent finished 28th in the 1-meter with a score of 221.80. The finish was the highest ever by a South African on the 1-meter board.

Two more Gamecock swimmers will compete at the World Championships starting on July 23. Akram Mahmoud will represent Egypt in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle, and Tomas Peribonio will represent Ecuador in the 400m freestyle and the 200m and 400m individual medleys.


HEAD DIVING COACH Todd Sherritt- "What a great week this has been! We had a goal of finishing in the top-12 and we accomplished that. Julia has really made a name for herself on the World level.

You really need to crack the top-12 early to establish yourself as a medal contender for the next Olympics and she did that here finishing twelfth. Her next World level meet with be the Common Wealth Games in Australia. She will have another opportunity to contend for a medal.

This has been such a great experiance. Julia has established herself in the eyes of the world, now the next step is to medal."
