Gamecock Swimming & Diving Hosts Duke Saturday
Jan. 15, 2010
COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina's swimming and diving team will compete in its home waters for the first time in nearly two months as the Duke Blue Devils visit Columbia for a dual meet on Saturday at the Carolina Natatorium.
The Gamecocks enter this week's meet looking to stay with their winning ways after a pair of victories over College of Charleston on the road last Saturday. South Carolina's men are 2-4 on the season while the women are 1-5. South Carolina has performed well at home this season with the men earning a dual-meet victory over Kentucky on Oct. 9 and both teams turning in strong performances at the Gamecock Invitational in November.
Duke's men are 3-2 on the season, and the Blue Devil women enter the meet with a 4-3 overall record.
South Carolina's men and Duke's women likely have a bit of payback on their minds. In a meet that came down to the final relay in Durham last season, the Carolina women eked out 151-149 victory by virtue of taking first and third place in the last race. The Gamecock men, trailing by 13 points entering the final race, could not take the needed first- and second-place spots to secure a tie and fell by a 153-145 margin.
The teams are already familiar with each other this season. Duke competed in the Gamecock Invitational in November with their men taking a third-place finish behind North Carolina and South Carolina. The Blue Devil women finished second behind North Carolina and just ahead of the Gamecocks.
South Carolina's women have never lost to Duke in four all-time meetings. The Gamecock men are 6-3 all-time against the Blue Devils.
All of the diving events will take place prior to the start of the meet, beginning at noon. The swimming portion of the meet is slated for a 2 p.m. start. Admission is free, and live results will be available through SportsTiming.com.
