History
The Gamecocks have played 39 seasons of women's basketball as part of the athletics department, including the last 22 in the Southeastern Conference. South Carolina has finished among the nation's top 25 nine times in program history, including each of the past two seasons, and played in 10 NCAA Tournaments in the 32-year history of the event, highlighted by four trips to the Sweet 16. Under head coach Dawn Staley, the Gamecocks are eying a return to the top of the conference, looking to add to the five regular-season conference titles the program tallied from 1985-86 through 1990-91. South Carolina's early women's basketball history includes the 1979 NWIT Championship and a trip to the AIAW Final Four in 1980.
