AUDITION INFORMATION
On April 21, 2013, 28 beautiful and talented young ladies were selected for the 2013-2014 Carolina Girls Dance Team. The next Carolina Girls audition will be held in April 2014. Click HERE to meet the 2013-2014 Carolina Girls!
Audition Requirements:
The Carolina Girls Dance Team is a competitive team and dancers are required to have a strong technical background in order to compete with some of the top collegiate dance teams in the country. Technical skills required for the team include, but are not limited to:
- Triple/quadruple pirouette
- Fouetté turns (standard fouettés and sequence of variations)
- Variety of leaps (switch leap, leap in second, reverse grand jeté, calypso/barrel, switch tilt, etc.)
- Leg extensions (grand battements, leg holds, sustained développé, needle turns)
* Dancers will be asked to perform all of the above on the right and left sides.
Because the Carolina Girls perform in jazz, pom and hip-hop styles, strong technique is only the first of the criteria required to be on the team. Dancers should also be able to quickly learn and retain choreography and perform with style and energy. All three styles are very different, but are used equally both in game performances and in competition.
On the second day of the audition, finalists will be asked to perform four 8-counts of their own choreography, showcasing their individual strengths. The choreography should be suitable for a generic, upbeat song, which will be selected by the coaching staff.
The final portion of the judging is based on image and appearance. Each Carolina Girl serves as a representative of the University of South Carolina and is constantly in the public eye. Dancers are expected to uphold a collegiate image that meets standards of physical fitness, presentation and overall impression.
