Adams, Harris Lead Gamecocks in Round Two at Sea Island

South Carolina Athletics

Sophomore duo combined to shoot 5-under with six birdies and just one bogey on tricky par-70 layout

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – South Carolina sits 10th at the 2024 SEC Men’s Golf Championship thru 36 holes after playing solid team golf on Thursday. The Gamecocks were one of nine teams to break par in round two with a 2-under tally of 278.

Sophomore Zach Adams fired an impressive, bogey-free 67 (-3) as he led the team with the best round of his career to date. The Charleston, S.C., native started hot with three birdies in the oening six holes. He finished his round with 12-straight pars. Adams is T-20th at 1-under for the tournament and will seek his fifth career top-20 finish on Friday.

The Gamecocks started on the back nine today at Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course.

Redshirt sophomore Frankie Harris shot 68 (-2) again to remain inside the top-10. He made three-straight birdies on holes 14 thru 16 on the back nine. The only blemish on his scorecard was a bogey at the par-4 second hole. The Boca Raton, Fla., native will be going for his team-leading fifth top-10 finish tomorrow in his SEC Championship debut.

Sixth-year Lansdon Robbins remained steady with a 1-over 71. He carded a pair of birdies on the front nine. Freshman Bo Carpenter had a nice bounce back round today with a 2-over 72. The Tifton, Ga., native had two early bogeys but then made 13 consecutive pars to right the ship. Senior Rafe Reynolds shot 78 (+8) with one birdie coming par-3 third hole.

Wind was down today at Sea Island but pins were in difficult spots making the golf course challenging still. Carolina will need more steady, disciplined golf in round three for a chance to get into match play. The Gamecocks currently sit eight shots back of No. 11 Arkansas who is in eighth. Carolina looks to make match play for the fourth time in seven seasons under head coach Bill McDonald since the league switched to the new format at the conference tournament in 2017.

No. 2 Vanderbilt has a four-shot lead over No. 15 Florida and No. 23 Georgia. The Gators had the round of the day with a 10-under 270. Auburn’s Jackson Koivun fired another 66 (-4) and has a one-shot lead at 8-under over Florida’s Jack Turner. Harris is still in the hunt for individual SEC title sitting just four shots back of the leader.

The Gamecocks will be paired with Kentucky and Mississippi State again for Friday’s final round.  Reynolds will be the first player off for Carolina from hole 10 at 9:20 a.m. (ET) with live scoring available via Golfstat.
