Gamecocks Score 4-1 Victory Against Mississippi St.

April 7, 2017

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The No. 13 South Carolina women’s tennis team scored a 4-1 victory against No 16 Mississippi St. on Friday night at the Carolina Tennis Center in Columbia, SC. The Gamecocks improved to 15-6 and 6-4 in conference play, while Mississippi St. fell to 13-6 overall and 6-5 in the SEC.

The Gamecocks needed just under an hour to take the doubles point from the Bulldogs, winning handily on courts two and three. The doubles pairing of Jasmine Lee and Lisa Marie Rioux (5) took a 6-1 win on court one before South Carolina claimed the remaining two to take the doubles point. Hadley Berg and Rachel Rohrabacher won first for the Gamecocks with a commanding 6-2 victory over Sara Lizariturry and Madison Harrison in the No. 3 spot. Not long after, Paige Cline and Brigit Folland clinched the point with a 6-3 decision against Khrystyna Vozniak and Jennifer Brown.

Mia Horvit (54) wasted no time pushing the Gamecocks’ lead to 2-0, ousting Rioux in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. With the win the freshman improved to 11-5 in dual matches and 5-4 in SEC play, including an impressive 5-1 record in the No. 2 spot. But the Bulldogs fired back with a quick, straight-set match of their own in a 6-1, 6-2 win for Lee (18) on court one making a 2-1 score.

But the bottom of the lineup held strong, with Folland and Berg contributing solid, straight-set triumphs to close out singles play for South Carolina. Folland would close out her match first on court six, taking a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lizariturry. The win is her sixth-straight in singles play and fifth straight in SEC matches.

Berg would display her ability to finish under pressure, clinching the match with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 triumph on court four, her highest SEC victory this season. With the win, she stayed perfect in dual play and stretched her win-streak to 17, the best in the SEC, and made a 4-1 final score.
