Gamecock Take Down the Tide

COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 13 South Carolina claimed a win over No. 34 Alabama Sunday at the Carolina Tennis Center. The Gamecocks dropped a close doubles point and trailed 3-1 in singles play, before claiming three straight matches in the bottom of the lineup for a 4-3 victory.

The Gamecocks improved to 14-6 overall and 5-4 in the SEC, while Alabama fell to 7-13 overall and 1-9 in league play.

Alabama got on the board first with doubles victories on courts one and three. Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Brigit Folland posted a 6-3 victory over Andie Daniell and Joanna Savva. Moments later Danielle Spielmann and Smith Hinton upended the freshman duo of Mia Horvit and Silvia Chinellato 6-3 in the No. 3 spot. Maddie Pothoff and Erin Routliffe (25) sealed the deal for the Tide with their 6-4 victory on court one.

In singles play, Spielmann doubled Bama’s lead with a dominating performance on court four (6-1, 6-0). Horvit (75) brought the match within one point with a straight-set victory on court two (6-4, 6-0) over her Daniell in the No. 2 spot. The win is her 10th in dual play this season and her fourth in SEC play. The Tide posted one more singles victory, a tightly contested 6-3, 7-5 battle on court one, before the Gamecocks mounted their rally.

Chinellato turned the momentum for the Gamecocks, taking her match with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-0 score to bring the score within one. Folland displayed true senior leadership with a straight-set victory on court six (6-4, 6-2), her fifth consecutive singles victory. Berg clinched the match for the Gamecocks and stayed perfect on the season with a 7-6, 6-2 triumph on court five. She is now 16-0 overall and 6-0 in the SEC.
