BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. — Women’s golfer Sarah Schmelzel continued to pace South Carolina at the Bryan National Collegiate on Saturday, as the senior carded a 1-under 71 to move into a tie for second place (144, E) on the individual leaderboard. The Gamecocks sit in fourth place at 20-over (596) for the tournament following their 299 (+11) in round two at the Bryan Park Champions Course.

Schmelzel, who finished third in the 54-hole event in 2013, turned in a steady round on Saturday, collecting 15 pars. She tallied a birdie on the par-4 eighth before making the turn at 1-under 35, and the Phoenix, Ariz., native opened her back nine with a birdie on No. 10. She recorded just one bogey on the day and finished her round with six-straight pars.

Freshman Marion Veysseyre shot South Carolina’s second-lowest round of the day, firing a 2-over 74. She notched birdies on two of her first four holes and recorded a front-nine score of 1-under 35. Veysseyre registered pars on each of her first four holes following the turn before recording bogeys on No. 14, 17 and 18. Her two-day total of 152 (+8) puts her in a tie for 35th place heading into Sunday’s final round.

Junior Katelyn Dambaugh and sophomore Ainhoa Olarra both sit in a tie for 28th place at 7-over (151) for the tournament through two rounds of competition. Dambaugh posted a 76 (+4) on Saturday, finishing with 14 pars and four bogeys, while Olarra shot a 6-over 78. Olarra recovered from a front-nine 5-over (41), as she birdied the par-3 12th and played her final nine holes at 1-over (37).

Jia Xin Yang will begin the third round in a tie for 49th place at 11-over (155) after shooting a 7-over 79 in round two. The junior finished Saturday with nine pars and a birdie on her opening hole, the par-4 first. Freshman Gaby Amos, who is competing as an individual this week, sits in a tie for 72nd place with a two-day total of 163 (+19).

Virginia remained atop the leaderboard at 8-over (584) following a 295 (+7) on day two, while Florida State moved up four spots into second place (589, +13) after posting a second-round 290 (+2). Wake Forest (595, +19) sits in third place and Kentucky (599, +23) rounds out the top five. Florida State’s Matilda Castren fired a 1-under 71 to take over the individual lead with a 36-hole total of 142 (-2).

“It was extremely windy conditions today, especially on our finishing holes. The team battled well all day. Sarah’s round was extremely impressive on a golf course that plays tough. Marion also gave us a big round as well.”

Round Changer

Sarah Schmelzel saw a terrific start to her second round, as the senior carded a front-nine 35 (-1) and played her first 12 holes at 2-under.

Notable

  • South Carolina has totaled the second-most pars (118) among the field through two rounds of the Bryan National Collegiate. Junior Katelyn Dambaugh is tied for first individually with 27 pars.
  • Senior Sarah Schmelzel’s 1-under (72) on Saturday marked her ninth round of par or better this season. She leads the field in par-4 scoring (3.95) this week.
  • Marion Veysseyre’s second-round 74 (+2) was one stroke off her career low 18-hole score. The freshman has carded a 73 in the second round of each of her last three tournaments.
