COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina track and field program hosted the USC Open #2 Wednesday night at the USC Fieldhouse. Despite only sending out 14 athletes, the Gamecocks would bring home the top collegiate finish in five events.

Kierstin Williams earned the top collegiate finish in the weight throw to start out the day for Carolina. The junior hit 50 feet, 5 ½ inches twice on the day, just a half inch off matching her personal best. She finished second overall in the competition, behind only Amber Campbell, a two-time Olympian in the hammer throw.

On the track, the women picked up wins in the mile and 3000m. Anna McElrath took home the mile by almost a full minute, and Sarah Taylor held off teammate Sarah Falta to claim the 3K win.

The men’s team won a pair of events, one in the field and one on the track. Drew Galang edged out a pair of teammates to win the 800 with a time of 2:02.27. David Yang would take second and Darryl Dunham third. Chris Cochran won the pole vault to close out the meet, passing over 13 feet, 9 ¼ inches for his first collegiate win.

Next up for the team will be the Conference Clash this coming weekend. The meet, hosted by Auburn, will pit eight SEC schools against seven “Power Five” schools in a scored event that runs Friday to Saturday.
