WILMINGTON, N.C. — Women’s golf senior Sarah Schmelzel paced South Carolina on day one of the Landfall Tradition, carding a 1-under (71) at the Country Club of Landfall Dye Course on Friday. The Gamecocks (+13) sit tied for 10th place through one round of the three-day event.

Schmelzel (T-8th), who began her day on the par-4 10th, tallied three birdies on Friday, starting on hole No. 15. She made the turn at 1-under (35) following another birdie on No. 18, and the Phoenix, Ariz. native shot an even (36) over her final nine holes.

Junior standout Katelyn Dambaugh (T-13th) also turned in a solid round, as she posted an even (72). Dambaugh made the turn at 1-over (37) after three bogeys and two birdies on the front nine before tallying birdies on holes No. 2 and 4. Her four birdies in round one led all Gamecocks.

Freshman Isidora Nilsson, sophomore Ainhoa Olarra and junior Jia Xin Yang marked the other Gamecocks in action on Friday. Nilsson carded a 6-over (78), while Yang tallied two birdies in her opening round and sits in a tie for 80th place after shooting an 8-over (80). Olarra (T-87) opened her week with a 9-over (81).

Duke sits atop the leaderboard after firing a 287 (-1) on Friday, while Oklahoma State (+1) and Notre Dame (+2) round out the top three. The Fighting Irish’s Isabella DiLisio holds the low individual score after posting a 5-under (67) in round one.
