COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina Fall Invitational got underway Friday at the Carolina Tennis Center before rain forced the action indoors to the USC Field House. Eight Gamecocks saw action as South Carolina took on Oklahoma and Arkansas in singles play and William & Mary in doubles. The Gamecocks received strong performances from junior Brigit Folland and freshman Ingrid Gamarra Martins to lead the way on day one.

“This is a good tournament to see where we are in singles,” head coach Kevin Epley said. “I am glad to see some of the younger girls competing well. We are seeing some positive things, but I feel like we have a lot of areas we can improve.”

Folland took down Mimi Fotopoulos of Oklahoma 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8) before teaming with Martins in doubles to defeat Olivia Thaler and Deepa Dhore of William & Mary, 6-4. Martins posted a strong win of her own in singles with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Oklahoma’s Christiana Brigante, moving her record to 5-1.

Sophomore Hadley Berg suffered her first loss of the season against Oklahoma’s Simran Sethi, but recovered to defeat Arkansas’s Oleksandra Shkorupeieva in the afternoon, 7-5, 6-3. She is now 6-1 this fall. Sophomore Allison Mills was 1-0 on the day claiming a win over Arkansas’s Peyton Jennings, 7-6 (1), 6-2.

South Carolina went unbeaten in doubles play Friday, sparked by an early morning win from teammates Hannah Templeton and Allison Mills, who cruised to a 6-3 victory over North Florida’s Mariella Calderon and Hannah Fluhrer. The Gamecocks swept William & Mary 3-0 to finish 4-0 on the day and are now 14-5 in doubles matches this fall.

Play resumes at the USC Field House Saturday morning at 9 a.m. South Carolina is set for a singles matchup with William & Mary at 11 a.m., and doubles play with North Florida at 3 p.m.
