PINEHURST, N.C. – A pair of South Carolina women’s golfers currently sit near the top of the leaderboard of the 113th Women’s North & South Amateur, which wrapped up day two of competition at Pinehurst Country Club on Tuesday.

Junior Sarah Schmelzel carded a 2-over 72 to move into third place (+8), while sophomore Katelyn Dambaugh posted a 5-over 75 on day two and currently stands in seventh (+10).

Schmelzel, who opened the championship with a 6-over 76, made the turn at 2-over and played the final nine holes at even par. Her score on Tuesday tied for the low round of the day, and her lone birdie came on the 10th hole.

Dambaugh surged to third place on Tuesday following back-to-back birdies to open the back nine, but bogeys on each of the final two holes dropped the South Carolina standout in a five-way tie for seventh.

Both Gamecocks will look to secure a spot in the match play rounds as they head into the final day of stroke play on Wednesday. The field will be cut to 16 golfers after day three, and the opening round and quarterfinals of match play will take place on Thursday. The semifinals and 18-hole final are set for Friday, and each round this week takes place at Pinehurst No. 2 course.
