MILWAUKEE — The South Carolina women’s tennis team wrapped up its first tournament of the fall with a 7-2 record Sunday on the final day of play at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic hosted by Marquette at The Town Club.
South Carolina took two out of three in doubles from Marquette to begin the morning. Caroline Dailey and Megen Cochran defeated Ana Pimienta and Erin Gebes 8-5, while Brigit Folland and Meghan Blevins beat Ali Dawson and Aleeza Kanner 8-4 for the Gamecocks’ other win. Marquette’s lone victory came courtesy of Paula Tormos Sanchez and Diana Tokar who upended Katie Fosnacht and Alison Mills 8-4.
The Gamecocks’ five singles against Western Michigan saw no one drop more than two games in a set. Dailey scored a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Meika Ashby and Blevins cruised past Olivia Myers by the same score. No. 114 Folland was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Caroline Aleck, Cochran raced past Tracy Kuhle 6-1, 6-2 and Berg won 6-1, 6-2 versus Labina Petrovska. Western Michigan’s Yuriko Ono earned a 6-4, 4-6, (10-7) victory against Mills.
Berg, Cochran, Dailey and Folland all had stellar weekends in Milwaukee as each player posted a 3-0 record for singles and doubles. Blevins also gave a strong showing with a 3-0 mark for singles and a 2-1 record in doubles matches. Dailey earned the singles champion trophy for her efforts, while Blevins was named the runner-up. Dailey also picked up the doubles champion award with Cochran.
South Carolina will rest next weekend and then head to Greenville, S.C., for the Furman Fall Classic over Sept. 26-28.
