ATHENS, Ga. – South Carolina finished off day three prelims at the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships by earning seven spots in the tonight’s finals at Gabrielsen Natatorium. Carolina landed six of those finals berths in two events – the women’s 400 IM and the men’s 200 freestyle.

The women’s 400 IM group started off the morning and the Gamecocks had a strong showing led by senior Abby Galbreath (4:15.83) who narrowly missed a new personal record as she finished 11th overall to earn a spot in the B Final. Junior Victoria Mitchell (4:17.05) and sophomore Elisabeth Worrell (4:19.61) each set new personal record in the event to reach the C Final. For Worell, she bested her previous record by nearly seven seconds.

The men followed up with one finalist as Alex Vance shattered his personal record to run away with heat one. Clocking in at 3:55.51, the junior topped his previous record by more than 12 seconds. The time held through the remaining heats, earning him a spot in the C Final. Matt Navata appeared to have earned a spot into tonight’s finals, but the senior was unfortunately disqualified for a turn violation.

Like the women’s 400 IM, the men’s 200 freestyle group also sent three into tonight’s finals with each of the three having competed in yesterday’s 500 freestyle. Sophomore Marwan El Kamash led the way again finishing at 1:35.74, 0.09 seconds ahead of senior Gerard Rodriguez as both reached the B Final. Redshirt senior Michael Flach clocked in at 1:36.53 to earn a spot in the C Final.

Finals are set to begin at 6 p.m. ET with the women’s 400 IM.
