SORRENTO, Fla. — The South Carolina women’s golf team posted a score of 306 (+18) on Monday in the second round of the UCF Challenge at RedTail Golf Club.

The Gamecocks, who entered the day with the tournament lead, fell to eighth place in the team standings with a total of 590 (+14) heading into Tuesday’s final round.

“We struggled to make birdies and had a tough time gaining momentum,” South Carolina head coach Kalen Harris said. “We look to bounce back strong tomorrow.”

Sophomore Justine Dreher, junior Samantha Swinehart and freshman Chelsey Couch tied for the low round of the day for the five Gamecocks in the lineup with a 4-over 76. Freshman Mary Fran Hillow, who is playing as an individual, turned in a 2-over 74 to climb five spots into a tie for 18th.

Dreher, who is in a tie for 12th, remains in the hunt for medalist honors just five strokes off the pace with a two-round score of 144 (E). She trails co-leaders Briana Mao of Virginia and Natalie Wille of Augusta State, who each have a total of 139 (-5). A native of Valbonne, France, Dreher extended her bogey free streak to 28 holes as she made par on her first 10 holes Monday. However, she struggled down the stretch making a bogey on the 11th and 14th holes and a double bogey on 18 to wrap up her round at 4-over par.

Swinehart is still in contention for a top-20 finish as she is tied for 22nd with a total of 147 (+3). Swinehart recorded one birdie, five bogeys and 12 pars on the day.

A native of Orlando, Fla., Hillow continued her steady play in the first collegiate tournament of her career. After shooting an even-par 72 on Sunday, she went 2-over on Monday by recording a pair of birdies, four bogeys and 12 pars.

Couch moved into a tie for 48th with a total of 151 (+7) after carding three birdies, three bogeys, two double bogeys and 10 pars on Monday. Fellow freshman Sarah Schmelzel is also in a group tied for 48th as she turned in a round of 80 (+8). Schmelzel recorded just one birdie on the day and made five bogeys and two double bogeys to go along with 10 pars. Rounding out the Gamecock lineup, junior Suzie Lee shot a 78 (+6) and is tied for 57th with a score of 152 (+8).

Ninth-ranked North Carolina took the tournament lead after shooting a 10-under 278. The Tar Heels hold a 16-stroke lead with a total of 565 (-11). Host UCF and Tulane are tied for second with a score of 581 (+5), followed by East Carolina (587) and Augusta State (587).

Final-round play is slated to get underway with a shotgun start on Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. The Gamecocks will be paired with Virginia and Mississippi. Live scoring will be available here.
