PHILADELPHIA – The opening day of the 118th Penn Relays Carnival was an historic one for South Carolina sophomore Petra Olsen with the Gamecock setting the women’s pole vault college section event record after posting the win at 13’4 ¼ (4.07m).

Olsen broke the two-year old record that was set by Arkansas’s Janice Keppler at the 2010 Penn Relays by half an inch to claim the win. The mark of 13’4 ¼ matches her outdoor personal best that was set two weeks ago at the Spec Towns Invitational and was a bright spot of a gloomy day at Franklin Field.

Junior Breanna Radford also set a PR Thursday with her fourth-place finish in the shot put championship section at 51’9 ¾ (15.79m). The mark moves Radford to sixth in the Gamecock record books. In the college section of the shot put, Katie Vuckovich placed seventh at 47’5 ¼ (14.46m), and Stacee Roberts placed 11th at 45’4 ¼ (13.82m).

Freshman Kayla Lampe ran a season best time of 17:05.85 in the 5,000-meter run to place 17th overall. In the other two distance events, senior Beatrice Biwott took ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 11:00.29, and sophomore Penny Boswell competed in the 10,000-meter run which ended after 11:30 p.m. (ET).

The Gamecocks also earned top 15 finishes from sophomore Amber Allen in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.01) as well as the 4×400-meter relay that placed 10th overall at 3:39.76. The 4×100-meter relay team finished 31st at 47.29.

In the jumps, Chalese Davis (20th // 18’6) and Ceci Kryst (25th // 18’1 ¾) competed in the long jump, and freshman Sarah Graham (22nd // 5’3) competed in the high jump.

The Gamecock men hit the track first in Friday’s action with Juan Stenner and Nejmi Burnside both competing in the 400-meter hurdles at 9 a.m.
