COLUMBIA, S.C. – Twelve schools from the states of South Carolina and Georgia competed at the Gamecock Open Wednesday night at Weems Baskin Track, and the Gamecocks came away with 11 wins in the final home meet of the season.
The South Carolina men earned wins in the pole vault and discus throw from Marvin Reitze and Chris Campbell. Reitze led a 1-2 finish with teammate Matt Shuler in the pole vault after clearing a season best 17’6 ½ (5.35m). Shuler took second at a season best 17’0 ¾ (5.20m), clearing the bar on his first attempt of the day.
Campbell competed two days after being named South Carolina’s nominee for the SEC Brad Davis Community Service Award and responded with a win in the men’s discus throw at a season best 147’0 (44.80m).
On the women’s side, the Gamecocks posted wins in nine of 12 events on the day, including a clean sweep in each running event that a Gamecock participated in. Junior Melekia Simpson swept the short sprints with wins in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. The transfer from Coastal Carolina took the 100-meter victory at 12.27, and she won the 200-meter at 25.54.
Freshman Morgan Allman ran a season best time of 2:21.84 in the 800-meter dash, and classmate Meredith Mill won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in her first collegiate attempt at 11:50.79. South Carolina placed first and second in both the 1,500-meter run and the 5,000-meter run. In the 1,500-meter, Megan Rother won at 4:59.61 and was followed by Erin Fedewa at 5:06.20. Bryttin Boyde won the 5,000-meter run at 19:24.17 with Kelly Newcomb taking second at 19:52.86.
Sophomore Emily Laurence was the first Gamecock woman to get a victory on the day with her javelin throw performance of 136-08 (41.66m), a personal best of two inches from her performance at the SEC Outdoor Championships last season that ranks No. 2 in the Gamecock history books.
The Gamecocks also earned field event wins in the long jump and pole vault. Ceci Kryst won the long jump at 19’1 ½ (5.83m). The pole vault was won by Megan Wall at 11’5 ¾ (3.50m), matching her season best; Kelly Fischer took second at 10’0 (3.05m).
South Carolina will return to action this weekend as well when the team travels to Gainesville, Fla., to compete at the Pepsi Florida Relays. Sophomore Jeannelle Scheper will travel to Hamilton, Bermuda, to compete for St. Lucia in the high jump at the LIME CARIFTA Games.
