MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The South Carolina women won the inaugural Shamrock Invitational Mayor’s Relay Cup, and the men’s team finished as the runner-up to the trophy to conclude competition at the first outdoor track meet of the season.

The Mayor’s Relay Cup is awarded to the male and female teams with the highest point total at the conclusion of the four relay events (4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m, 4x800m) at the meet hosted by Coastal Carolina at Doug Shaw Stadium. The Gamecock women’s team finished the weekend with two relay victories (4x200m and 4x400m) – both at meet record times – in addition to a third-place and fourth-place finish for 25 total points, 10 points ahead of team runner-up Coastal Carolina. The Gamecock men’s team finished second with 29 points to St. Augustine’s 31 points after finishing the weekend two wins (4x100m and 4x200m) in addition to a third-place finish in the 4x400m and sixth-place finish in the 4x800m.

South Carolina also had wins on Saturday from sophomore Clayton Gravesande and freshman Chalese Davis. Gravesande won the men’s 400-meter dash at a time of 47.05. Davis won her second event in as many days with a time of 13.89 in the 100-meter hurdles.

The Gamecocks also had runner-up finishes from Nadonnia Rodriques (W-400m), Breanna Radford (W-shot put), James Adams (M-triple jump) and Chris Royster (M-100m).

South Carolina hosts the Weems Baskin Invitational next weekend at home.
