COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina track posted six wins at the Gamecock Indoor Invitational Wednesday in the first home meet of the 2012 season.

Using a small contingent of athletes at the meet, Carolina’s men earned wins in the pole vault and weight throw. Marvin Reitze claimed first in the men’s pole vault with a clearance of 17’0 ¾ (5.20m), and Chris Campbell won the weight throw with a personal best mark of 51’6 ¼ (15.70m).

Reitze’s mark was a facility record at the USC Fieldhouse, surpassing Elliott Haynie’s record that was set in the 2010 season. Freshman Colin Buxton cleared a season best 14’5 ¼ (4.40m) to take third overall in the event.

Following Campbell in the weight throw was Trey Suhrstedt who placed fifth at 43’4 ½ (13.22m). Two Gamecock men competed in the 800-yard run with Adam King taking second at 2:07.67 and Kevin Keating taking eight overall at 2:12.08.

On the women’s side, South Carolina came away with four victories total between Megan Rother (mile run), Kierre Beckles (55m hurdles), Sarah Graham (high jump) and Petra Olsen (pole vault).

Olsen won her first meet of the year after clearing 12’5 ¼ (3.79m) in the women’s pole vault. Freshman Megan Wall claimed third at 10’11 ½ (3.34m), and classmate Kelly Fischer took sixth overall at 9’5 ¾ (2.89m).

Graham, one of three Gamecock freshmen women to compete three times on the short day, won the high jump at a season best mark of 5’5 (1.65m). Chalese Davis and Jemekia Wilson both cleared 5’1 (1.55m) in what was also one of three events of the day for the trio.

Four Gamecocks competed in the women’s 55-meter hurdles with Beckles claiming her first win of the season with a time of 7.90. The All-American was followed by Davis (8.12) in second, Wilson (8.57) in fourth and Graham (8.64) in fifth.

Rother won the women’s mile at 5:35.94 and was followed by Erin Fedewa in second place at 5:42.25.

The Gamecocks hit the road this weekend to compete at the Rod McCravy Invitational on the campus of the University of Kentucky. The meet will give the Gamecocks a chance to compete at the site of next month’s SEC Indoor Championships.
