SHENZEN, China – Three University of South Carolina track and field alums competed for their respective countries at the World University Games last week, bringing home two medals and two fourth-place finishes.

Lakya Brookins and Shayla Mahan ran the first and second legs for Team USA’s 4×100-meter relay team that earned silver medal honors with a time of 43.48. The 2011 Gamecock seniors teamed with Christina Manning and Tiffany Townsend to take second behind the Ukraine (43.33) after also taking second in the preliminary round.

Mahan also competed individually in the 100-meter dash where she placed fourth in the final with a time of 11.45, missing out on the bronze medal by .01 seconds.

Class of 2010 sprinter Obakeng Ngwigwa represented his country of Botswana on the men’s side, competing in three separate events. Ngwigwa ran the second leg of the men’s 4×400-meter relay team that placed fourth overall at 3:07.13. Ngwigwa’s split of 45.8 was the third-fastest split of the entire field in the final.

Ngwigwa also competed individually, making the finals in the 400-meter dash and the semifinal in the 200-meter dash. He placed eighth in the 400-meter final with a time of 46.51 while running in lane one. He took sixth in the 200-meter semifinal with a time of 21.14.

Next up for Gamecock athletes is the 2011 World Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Daegu, South Korea. The event runs from August 27 to September 4.

ABOUT THE WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES: Team USA was composed of 10 men and 10 women between the ages of 17 and 27, who have completed at least one three-credit course toward a degree or diploma within the last year and have met the qualifying standard in their respective event.
