Spartanburg, S.C. – Top ranked South Carolina tallied 14 hits including a 4-for-5 day at the plate by Christian Walker as well as three hits apiece by Brady Thomas and Evan Marzilli as the Gamecocks defeated Wofford 9-3 on Wednesday night at Russell C. King Field. Carolina improves to 36-8 while the loss drops Wofford to 19-26.
Sophomore left-hander Adam Westmoreland allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks to pick up his first win of the year. He is now 1-1 on the year. Wofford starting pitcher Drew Sheridan allowed two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and a walk to take the loss. He is 1-4 for the season.
Carolina broke ahead 2-0 in the top of the first inning against Sheridan. Peter Mooney drew a leadoff walk and Scott Wingo singled giving the Gamecocks a pair of runners with no outs. Christian Walker drove in Mooney with a RBI single down the left field line and Mooney scored on a passed ball.
That lead extended to 3-0 in the third inning as Walker tallied his second hit of the game, a two-out double to right center, and scored on Brady Thomas’ RBI single to right field. South Carolina also scored a single run in the fourth inning as Evan Marzilli was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a two-out fielding error by first baseman Konstantine Diamaduros off a ball hit by Steven Neff to push the Gamecocks ahead four runs.
South Carolina increased the lead to 6-0 in the top of the fifth inning. Wingo, Walker and Thomas all singled with one out to load the bases. Jake Williams would plate home a run with a walk and Adrian Morales drove in Walker with a sacrifice fly to center field.
David Roney would put Wofford on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-run homer, his third home run of the season. After a one-out single by Landon Bennett, Roney roped a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall that cut Carolina’s lead to 6-2. Carolina would get a run back in the seventh as Wingo walked, Walker singled and Wingo scored his third run of the game on Jake Williams’ one-out RBI single giving Carolina the 7-2 lead.
South Carolina extended the advantage to 9-2 in the eighth inning. Marzilli led off with a triple, his third hit of the game, and scored on Robert Beary’s RBI single. The base hit extended Beary’s hitting streak to 10 games. He would eventually score on a sacrifice fly from Wingo to put Carolina ahead by seven runs.
South Carolina is back in action on Friday night beginning a three-game series at Ole Miss. First pitch for the opener is 7:30 p.m. ET with the game available on the Gamecock Radio Network.
