CONWAY, S.C. – Aimee Kodat and Jeannelle Scheper both hit personal bests to lead South Carolina at the Shamrock Invitational to open the outdoor season for the South Carolina track and field teams.
Kodat threw 164’5 (50.12m) to win the women’s discus throw while Scheper matched her personal best of 5’8 ¾ (1.75m) to win the women’s high jump. Scheper is now second in the Gamecock record books in both the indoor and outdoor high jump after also hitting the mark at the Gamecock Invitational earlier this season.
At the end of the competition, the Gamecock women had 11 wins and the Gamecock men had two wins. Senior Janica Austin led the way with wins in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles. Shayla Mahan won the 100-meter dash at 11.35, and Scola Jepngetich won the 800-meter run at 2:11.99. The women swept the sprint relays with wins in the 4×100 (Bandy, Mahan, Glenn, McCorkle – 44.93), 4×200 (McCorkle, Bandy, Delaney, Allen – 1:37.33) and 4×400 (Allen, Eley-O’Reilly, Austin, McCorkle – 3:44.04). The team also earned wins in two field events as Angie Rummans won the pole vault at 12’5 ½ (3.80m) and Breanna Radford won the shot put at 47’11 ¼ (14.61m).
Victories for the men’s team came in the triple jump and 400-meter dash. Freshman Clayton Gravesande ran 47.06 to take the 400-meter title while sophomore Lincoln Carr jumped 50’3 ½ (15.33m) to win the triple jump.
South Carolina hosts the Weems Baskin Invitational next Saturday, March 26, in the only home meet of the outdoor season.
