South Carolina Quotes
Head Coach Ray Tanner

On being down in the 2nd inning
“Honestly, I was thinking that things aren’t very good around here right now. The good news is there were a lot of innings left. I expected (Nolan) Belcher was to settle in, but he didn’t. (Jose) Mata came in and rolled some ground balls and we were able to have a big inning. We didn’t get a lot of hits that inning, but we were able to put together some at bats and some competitive situations, and it all worked out for us. It certainly wasn’t a great beginning for us.”

On Jose Mata
“I was looking for him to stop the bleeding. It was a kind of ugly out there. He’s been known to get a few ground balls for us and I was hoping he would come in and do that. He got a bunch of them. He just held them off and gave us a chance to get some runs on the board. When we recruited him, we were told that he can roll the ground ball. We also were told by a couple of people that he will extend (his outing) every once in awhile, and that’s what he did tonight.”

On the play of the team up to this point
“We’ve got to get better. We did get some runs and we tacked on a couple late, but we need to play with a little more sense of urgency. We need to play with a bit of a chip on our shoulder. “
