BOCA RATON, Fla. – Sophomore Audrey Broyles tossed a one-hit shutout to lead South Carolina (7-4) past Providence, 1-0, in the Gamecocks’ first game at the Florida Atlantic Softball Stadium on Saturday morning.
The south Florida native Broyles (3-0) struck out six in her second shutout of the season, not walking any Friar batters while allowing just the one hit. The one-hitter is the 46th by the Gamecocks since 1996 and the first since Melissa Hendon did it to Auburn on April 6, 2008.
Junior Laura Mendes brought home the game-winning run in the sixth, putting a ball past the pitcher up the middle to score sophomore Lauren Lackey. Lackey started the inning by reaching on an error before moving to second on sophomore Sam Arbaugh’s sacrifice bunt. After another groundout, sophomore Kandyce Redondo slapped a ball to the Friars’ third baseman that she mishandled, putting runners on the corners ahead of Mendes’ hit. The Friars (0-7) stopped the ball behind the second base bag, but they were unable to get it to second in time for the force.
Alicia Grosso (0-2) got the loss, allowing the one unearned run on two hits and a walk while fanning four.
