University of South Carolina Athletics Director Eric Hyman announced today that Susan Walvius has resigned from her position as head women’s basketball coach effective May 31. Walvius leaves the Gamecocks after going 165-160, a .508 winning percentage, including a 51-103 record (.331) in Southeastern Conference play, in 11 seasons at the University.

“I’m very blessed to have had the chance to coach at South Carolina and am eternally grateful for the opportunity afforded to me over the past 11 years,” said Walvius. “I want to emphatically thank the players and coaches who have given so much. I have one of the best groups of kids ever and leaving them is difficult, but the time is right for me to pursue other opportunities. I am proud of many of the things we’ve accomplished at South Carolina athletically and academically and feel that the program is in a position to be nationally competitive with the three leading scorers returning and a seventh nationally ranked recruiting class on the way.

“I also want to thank those who have been so supportive as we’ve worked to build this program,” continued Walvius. “I love the people in the Columbia community and am especially grateful to the many Columbia leaders who have given of their time to mentor our athletes. I wish everyone at USC all the best and continued success.”

“I want to thank Susan for her service to the University of South Carolina, to the women’s basketball program and to the Columbia community,” said Hyman. “We wish her all the best in her future endeavors. We will begin a national search for Susan’s successor immediately.”

Walvius led South Carolina to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight in 2002. The Gamecocks earned a spot in the WNIT in each of the last three seasons.

Walvius began her head coaching career at Virginia Commonwealth, where she logged a 67-74 record in five seasons from 1990-1995. Prior to her arrival in Columbia, she spent two seasons (1995-97) at West Virginia where she posted a 31-27 mark. During her 18 years as a collegiate head coach she has accumulated a 263-261 record, a .502 winning percentage.
