COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s tennis team improved its record to 4-0 with back-to-back victories against Charleston Southern and Appalachian State, Saturday at the USC Indoor Fieldhouse. Carolina defeated CSU, 7-0, and ASU, 6-1. Senior Yevgeny Supeko and sophomore Pedro Campos each picked up victories at the No. 1 singles position on the day.

South Carolina easily secured the doubles point in its match against CSU. The team of Chris Sheehan and Joe Veeder captured an 8-3 win over Keith Whittingham and Luis Maselli, while Campos and Johannes Pulsfort secured the point for USC, defeating Grega Teraz and Guy David, 8-5. Jaime Cuellar and Ivan Cressoni completed the sweep for the Gamecocks in the closest doubles match of the three, claiming an 8-6 win over Steven Dean and Murat Atilla.

Carolina continued to dominate in singles play. Campos made quick work of his match, defeating Dean, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1, followed by Cubas at the No. 2 position, collecting a 6-0, 7-5 win over David. Cuellar played at No. 3, winning a hard-fought match against Teraz, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (6). At No. 4, Pulsfort defeated Atilla, 6-1, 6-1, and David Wolff followed at No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Rebolo. Stoddard completed the sweep for USC at No. 6 with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (3) victory over Maselli.

The Gamecocks also took a 1-0 lead in the afternoon match, winning the doubles point, 2-1. The team of Yevgeny Supeko and Cubas defeated Ryan Brookshaw and Lee Floyd, 8-3, while the team of Stoddard and Pulsfort joined forces for an 8-5 victory over Bobby Lake and David Doverspike. The lone Carolina loss came at the No. 2 position, as Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs of ASU defeated Wolff and Cressoni, 8-7 (5).

Carolina’s momentum carried over into singles play, as USC secured the match with a 5-1 singles record. At the No. 1 position, Supeko led the Gamecocks with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Lake, while Cubas at No. 2 and Campos at No. 3 easily won their matches. Cressoni proved victorious at No. 4, Wolff won a battle at No. 5 and Sheehan just narrowly missed a victory at the No. 6 position, falling to Doverspike, 6-1, 6-7 (2), 1-0 (5).

South Carolina returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 9 in a home doubleheader against Charlotte (10 a.m.) and Davidson (2:30 p.m.) at the USC Indoor Fieldhouse.
