Last Time Out
South Carolina saw 10 of 12 players find the coring column in a well-balanced 80-52 victory over UNC Asheville Thursday night at the Colonial Center. The Gamecocks used a 26-4 run over a six-minute span in the first half to shed a pesky Bulldog team. South Carolina shot 48.6 percent from the field and amassed 80 points despite neither of its top two scorers reaching double figures. Defensively, the Gamecocks held UNCA to just 25 percent shooting and 17 points below its season points average.

Scouting the Tigers
Savannah State is 8-6 and winner of four of its last five after a 74-66 win at Florida A&M on Friday night. Ivy Smith, the 2007 Division I Independent Newcomer of the Year, leads the Tigers at 15.4 points per game. She shoots 41.5 percent from the field, including a team-best 40.4 percent from 3-point range. Junior forward Patrice Robinson paces Savannah State on the glass with 5.4 rebounds per game. Additionally, she has blocked 12 shots and is second in the team with 19 steals. As a team, the Tigers are scoring 62.4 points per game on 41.3 percent shooting, including 29.6 percent from 3-point range. Opponents have scored 61.9 points per game on 38.4 percent shooting, including 29.0 percent from the 3-point line, and have out-rebounded the Tigers by 5.5 boards per game. Head coach Cedric Baker is in his fifth season at Savannah State with a 36-89 record, giving him a 16-year career mark of 228-202.

Series Notes
The Gamecocks are 1-0 against the Tigers. South Carolina posted a 94-37 victory over Savannah State on Dec. 19, 2005 in the Colonial Center. The Gamecocks have never lost a game to team not affiliated with any conference.

Injury Report
The Gamecocks have been without starting point guard Courtney Newton since Nov. 25 after she left the Illinois game with a knee injury. She is undergoing rehab and will likely miss a few more weeks. Freshman Ashlie Billingslea, who underwent knee surgery before the start of the season, will have her progress evaluated soon to determine her status for the rest of the season.

Suddenly Susan
Head coach Susan Walvius is in her 11th season as the Gamecocks’ mentor with a 159-148 record. She has led South Carolina to two NCAA Tournaments and two WNITs, including an NCAA Elite Eight appearance in 2001-02. Her players have also excelled in the classroom. In 2006-07, 10 Gamecocks appeared on the SEC Winter Sports Academic Honor Roll. In the last four years, South Carolina has placed more student-athletes on that list than any other school. Walvius has an 18-year career mark of 257-249.

A South Carolina Win Would …

  • Put the Gamecocks at 11-4 on the season, the program’s best 15-game start since the 2002-03 team went 13-2 en route to an NCAA Tournament bid.
  • Give the Gamecocks 11 non-conference wins, the most since the 2002-03 team posted 12 regular-season victories against non-SEC teams.
  • Improve Susan Walvius’ record to 75-12 in regular-season non-conference home games while at South Carolina.
  • Improve Susan Walvius’ record to 105-41 in regular-season games against non-conference opponents while at South Carolina.

Triple Threat
After a 2006-07 season that ended with no Gamecocks averaging double-figure points, three players are currently at the mark this season. Freshman Jordan Jones leads the way with 12.9 ppg, while junior Demetress Adams is just behind at 12.0 ppg and junior Brionna competes the group with 11.5 ppg, respectively. Seniors Lakesha Tolliver and Ilona Burgrova re on the verge of adding to the list, scoring 9.7 and 9.4 ppg, respectively.

Just Czeching
Since finding her offensive rhythm with a career-high-tying 17 points against Charleston Southern, senior Ilona Burgrova has reached double-figure points in five of the following six games. She missed extending her streak eight games by one point against UNC Asheville. Burgrova’s offensive surge has come against some of the tougher opponents on the Gamecocks’ schedule, which bodes well for South Carolina heading into SEC play next week. The center from the Czech Republic scored 11 points at No. 2 UConn and netted 15 at No. 9 Oklahoma.

Round, Round, Get Around
Junior Demetress Adams has been a multi-dimensional player for the Gamecocks and has been the team leader in either points, rebounds or assists in at least two games this season. The many facets of her game have been on full display in two of the team’s last three outings. In South Carolina’s 64-43 victory at arch rival Clemson on Dec. 22, she recorded her fifth double-double of the season while also matching her career high with five blocked shots and swiping a career-high six steals. Two games later, against UNC Asheville on Jan. 3, the forward narrowly missed a double-double with a team-high 12 rebounds and eight points to go along with five assists and five blocks.

Keeping Up With the Joneses
Senior Ebony Jones and freshman Jordan Jones have combined to give South Carolina outside scoring punch this season. The pair has combined to hit 54-of-127 (.425) from outside the arc this season. The duo was on fire against Jackson State. The Joneses shot 7-of-10 from 3-point range in the Dec. 7 outing, marking the third-highest team 3-point percentage in school history and the third-best in the SEC this season. In that game, each player took five shots from long range with Ebony hitting a career-high four.

Definitive Demetress
Junior Demetress Adams has recorded nine career double-doubles, and the Gamecocks are 9-0 in those games. The forward has reached the mark five times this season, leading to more than half of the Gamecocks’ victories. South Carolina is also undefeated in Adams’ three career games with five or more blocked shots, including two this season, and her four career games with five or more assists, including three this season.

The Game On the Line
As a team, the Gamecocks have struggled from the free-throw line this season, hitting just 65.4 percent of their attempts. But, when the game is on the line (quite literally), South Carolina has been able to sink them, hitting 76.9 percent in the last five minutes and 82.4 percent in the final two minutes of games. The five regular starters have missed just two free throws in 17 attempts in the game’s final two minutes and have hit 27-of-34 (79.4 percent) at the under five-minute mark. (See box on Page 6 for player-by-player breakdown.) Overall, the group is hitting just 64.0 (119-of-186) on the season.

50 First Dates – Well, Really Six
There are six first-time opponents on the Gamecocks’ non-conference schedule this season and have posted a 4-2 record against the group with wins over Saint Francis (Pa.), Buffalo, Jackson State and Alabama A&M. Illinois and No. 2 Connecticut handed South Carolina its only losses from the group.

Hold `Em
The Gamecocks tied a school record when they held Charleston Southern to just 26 points on Dec. 4. The Lady Bucs’ limited offense matched that of Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 21, 2005. South Carolina allowed Charleston Southern to shoot just 16.7 percent from the field, the second-lowest efficiency by an opponent in Gamecock history, trailing Bethune-Cookman’s 14 percent accuracy.

Locking Down
South Carolina entered the season with a lofty defensive reputation, and having held opponents to just 34.6 percent shooting this season to rank 21st in the nation and third in the SEC, the Gamecocks are living up to those expectations. In the season opener, Saint Francis (Pa.) netted just 33 points, and the Gamecocks held Charleston Southern to a school-record tying 26 points on Dec. 4. South Carolina allowed 70 or more points just four times this season, including two games against nationally-ranked opponents, while holding eight foes to 60 or fewer points. Last season, South Carolina yielded 70 or more points just eight times in 33 games, including six games against nationally-ranked teams, and held opponents to 60 or fewer points 16 times, including #7 LSU. The 2005-06 team set a school record by allowing opponents just 56.8 points per game. That season, 16 games saw opponents net 60 or fewer points while seven reached the 70-point plateau.

It’s a Block Party!
Through games of Jan. 3, South Carolina was seventh in the nation with 6.43 blocked shots per game, a number that leads the SEC. The Gamecocks trail North Carolina’s NCAA-best 7.7 blocks per game. South Carolina senior Lakesha Tolliver leads the SEC in blocks per game with 2.50, a number that ranks her 20th in the nation behind Louella Tomlinson of St. Mary’s (Calif.), who has swatted away 5.1 per game. Gamecock forward Demetress Adams is 45th in the country and sixth in the SEC with 2.14 blocks per game.

From Way Downtown
Freshman Jordan Jones leads the SEC and is ranked 20th in the nation with 2.79 3-point field goals made per game. The first-year guard, who has spent much of the last month at the point guard spot, is second in the league and 35th in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage, hitting 42.4 percent of her long-range shots. Robert Morris’ Sade Logan lead the nation with 3.9 3-point field goals per game, while Andrea Lightfoot of Idaho State is the country’s most efficient 3-point shooter at 55.4 percent (36-of-65). Karen Middleton holds the South Carolina record for 3-point field goal percentage by a freshman after hitting 43.4 percent (75-of-163) in 1987-88. Middleton holds the four best 3-point percentages in school history, including the record 46.9 percent (76-of-162), which she set as a junior in 1989-90. As a team, the Gamecock are 27th in the nation, third in the SEC, with a 3-point field goal percentage of .346, trailing Maryland’s NCAA-best 45.3 percent (126-of-278).

Balancing Act
After a 2006-07 campaign that saw the Gamecock frontcourt carrying the load, South Carolina’s offense this season has been more of a balance between inside and outside play. The inside quartet of Demetress Adams (181 pts), Ilona Burgrova (131 pts), Jewel May (31 pts) and Lakesha Tolliver (136 pts) has provided 34.2 of the teams 70.6 points per game (48.5%). Last season, the frontcourt accounted for 39.5 of the team’s 68.6 ppg (57.8%).

Like a Broken Record
One game after etching her name in as the school record holder for blocked shots in a game with seven against UNC Wilmington on Dec. 1, senior Lakesha Tolliver completed her trifecta of blocked shot records by becoming the South Carolina career record holder with five swats against Charleston Southern on Dec. 4. Just nine games into her senior season, Tolliver’s 165 career blocks has eclipsed the Michelle Murray’s previous record of 148. Tolliver set the school record for single-season blocked shots in 2006-07 with 60. She has 35 so far this season.

Bounce Back
Annually playing a difficult non-conference schedule in addition to its SEC slate, South Carolina has suffered a handful of decisive setbacks. The Gamecocks tend to recover quickly, however, and have done so this season. In the last four seasons, the Gamecocks are 7-3 in games after a loss of 20 or more points, and one of those losses was last season’s three-point defeat against No. 7 LSU following a 36-point loss at No. 3 Tennessee. That number includes three games this season – a 63-95 setback at No. 9 Oklahoma preceded an 80-52 win over UNC Asheville, a 97-39 loss at No. 2 UConn was followed by an 88-41 victory over Alabama A&M two days later, and a 91-58 loss to Illinois yielded an 82-66 win over Florida International.

Ms. Clutch
When the game is on the line, toss out the percentages and get the ball to Lakesha Tolliver. The senior began her reputation last season when, despite a 63.6 free throw shooting percentage, she drained three free throws with eight seconds left to tie Mississippi State, giving the Gamecocks the chance to pick up the overtime win. This season, on Nov. 15 against Virginia, South Carolina had one shot to win the game. Tolliver, who was 3-of-8 in the game and 6-of-17 on the season, drilled a 14-foot jumper with 1.3 seconds left to cap off a dramatic 25-7 run over the final 6:46 of the contest.

Double Double-Double
In the season opener against Saint Francis (Pa.), a pair of Gamecocks posted double-doubles for the second time in two seasons. Forwards Lakesha Tolliver and Demetress Adams accomplished the feat against the Red Flash, while Melanie Johnson and Ilona Burgrova turned the trick at Wilmington on Dec. 30, 2006. Prior to last season’s effort, the last Gamecock duo to record double-doubles was Iva Sliskovic and Cristina Ciocan against Southern Utah on Dec. 5, 2003.

What’s Next
Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but it’s worth noting that South Carolina’s fall signing class is ranked among the nation’s elite. Blue Star Basketball tabbed the Gamecocks’ fivesome of Becky Burke, Taylor Dalrymple, Charenee Stephens, Sada Wheeler and Tonia Williams the seventh-best class in the nation. Carolina is just behind perennial powers Tennessee, LSU, Rutgers, Connecticut, North Carolina and Georgetown. It is the highest-ranked recruiting class of head coach Susan Walvius’ tenure at South Carolina and is her third nationally-ranked group in the last four years.
