COLUMBIA, S.C. – The NCAA announced the 2007 Division I Women’s Softball Championship bracket Sunday afternoon and the South Carolina Gamecocks were among the 64-team field and will host one of 16 NCAA Regionals, May 18-20 at Beckham Field. The Gamecocks (34-23) will play against No. 15 national seed N.C. State Wolfpack (41-19), May 18 at 7 p.m. (ET). The Oregon Ducks (42-17) will play the Penn State Nittany Lions (26-23) at 4 p.m. (ET) to open day one action. Tickets can be purchased online at www.uscsports.com or at the Gamecock ticket office located at the Colonial Center box office, beginning Tuesday, May 15.

“We are excited about qualifying for the NCAA tournament, and also for the number of SEC teams that have qualified. This just shows the strength of our conference,” said head coach Joyce Compton. “It is an honor to be hosting the first round of the NCAA Tournament, as it is always exciting and fun to play in front of our fans. We are looking to put on a good show both on and off the field for our visitor’s.”

This marks the 15th NCAA Regional appearance for the Gamecocks, and the first since 2004. South Carolina is one of seven teams from the Southeastern Conference that was awarded a bid, and one of four teams to host. This will be the seventh regional hosted in Columbia, with the last being 2002. South Carolina’s all-time NCAA Tournament record is 25-24.

The double-elimination tournament will begin Friday, May 18 with two games at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday’s bracket is set for three games at 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. Sunday’s championship game will be at 1 p.m., with an “if necessary” game scheduled for 4 p.m. All times are eastern.

South Carolina has not faced any of the teams in its regional this year. Overall, the Gamecocks are 1-0 against N.C. State, 0-2 against Oregon and 7-1 against Penn State.

The Wolfpack finished second in the ACC with a 15-6 conference record, while Oregon finished seventh in the PAC-10 with a 7-14 record. Penn State finished eighth in the Big 10 with a 5-9 record.
