Charleston, S.C. – Chris Campbell’s one-out RBI double to right center in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted College of Charleston to a 5-4 win over second ranked South Carolina on Tuesday evening at Joe Riley Park. The win improves College of Charleston to 12-1 on the year while the loss drops the Gamecocks to 10-2 this season.
The Cougars got things started in the 10th inning as Curtis Johnson issued a one-out walk to Oliver Marmol followed by a bases on ball to Gabe Marchant. With Jordan Costner summoned from the bullpen for the Gamecocks, Chris Campbell came up to bat and fell behind 0-2 in the count before falling off several pitches. Campbell was able to finally connect and drilled a double into right center to score Marmol for the game-winning run. Johnson suffered the loss and is now 0-1 in his career. Brian Schlitter worked 2.1 innings and earned the win for the College of Charleston.
The College of Charleston outhit Carolina 12-5 with Campbell, Alex Garabedian, Michael Harrington, Graham Maiden and Stuart Haywood each with two hits. James Darnell was the lone Gamecock with more than one hit in the game as he finished 2-for-3.
College of Charleston went ahead 1-0 in the second inning on Carolina starter Jay Brown. Michael Harrington led off with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Lasater, reached third base on a wild pitch and scored on Graham Madien’s RBI groundout to second base. Harrington would get his second hit of the game off Brown in the fifth inning and increased the lead to 3-0 as he launched a two-run homer to right field off of Brown. The Gamecock right-hander lasted only 3.2 innings and allowed three runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts and one walk allowed.
The Gamecocks would cut the deficit to 3-1 in the sixth inning scoring an unearned run off the Cougars. Phil Disher and James Darnell each walked with one out and Jon Willard reached with the bases loaded on a fielding error by shortstop Oliver Marmol. Disher would score Carolina’s first run on a RBI groundout from Trent Kline. Beliveau was able to get out of the jam in the frame getting Reese Havens to pop out to second base for the third out of the inning. Carolina nearly tied the game in the top of the seventh inning as Justin Smoak launched a towering fly ball to right center only to have right fielder Gabe Marchant make the catch just near the wall at the end of the warning track.
After coming close in the seventh inning, the Gamecocks would storm back to take a 4-3 lead with three runs with two outs in the eighth inning. Trent Kline and Cheyne Hurst each walked to start the rally and Reese Havens connected with a RBI single to cut the deficit to one run. A hit by pitch to pinch hitter Robbie Grinestaff would load the bases for Lonnie Chisenhall, who reached base on an error by second baseman Chris Campbell. The Gamecocks would then go ahead by a run on a bases loaded walk to Justin Smoak. College of Charleston however tied it in the bottom half of the inning as Marmol doubled and scored on a two-out RBI single from Garabedian.
