Box Score

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – South Carolina has matched its season win streak as the Gamecocks defeated the Campbell Camels 3-0 in game two for the seventh consecutive win. USC is now 15-2 while the Camels fell to 8-8-1. Kate Pouliot improved to a career high, 9-0, while Kelly Weaver took the loss and fell to 3-4.

The Gamecocks recorded two runs in the fourth inning off of an error and a fielder’s choice to break the scoreless tie and take a 2-0 lead. McKenna Hughes led off the inning with a walk and then Cagney Davis entered the game to pinch run for Hughes. Davis stole second and advanced to third on a Camel error to put herself in prime scoring position. Lindsay Walker singled, but Davis stayed at third until shortstop Stephenie Pappas overthrew the ball for the second error of the inning, allowing Davis to score. Jacqueline Wetherbee reached on a fielder’s choice which scored Jessica Josker, who reached safely with a single.

In the next inning, Hughes hit career home run No. 28, with two outs, as she belted a solo shot to left field and added another run to the Gamecocks’ lead, 3-0. The home run was the fifth on the season for Hughes, 10th for the Gamecocks.

Pouliot recorded her 200th career strikeout out in the fourth when she rung up Shayla Callum for the third out in the inning.

Tori Martin recorded her first extra-base hit since Feb. 16 against Memphis when she plucked a triple to right field to lead off the seventh inning. That marked the fifth on the year for the team, the first for Martin’s career. Unable to score when Payne followed with a single, Martin was stranded at third after Adele Voigt struck out and Hughes grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Pouliot gave up a hit to lead off the bottom half of the seventh, but the Gamecocks got out of the inning unscathed with a play at second, a strikeout and a foul out.

The Gamecocks have now recorded six shutouts this season. Since their loss to No. 22 FSU, USC has only surrendered four runs and have outscored its opponents 30-4.

South Carolina returns home this weekend and will host Charlotte on Saturday and Pittsburgh on Sunday. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
