Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina women’s soccer returns to action on Monday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. as the Gamecocks host Furman at Stone Stadium. Carolina enters with a 1-0 record following Friday night’s 7-0 season opening win over Mercer. Furman also comes into the match with a 1-0 record. Monday night’s game will be broadcast live on uscsports.com with live gametracker stats also available. Monday is also Youth Team Night; all kids wearing their youth team jersey can get into the match for just a $1.

FOR STARTERS

South Carolina is now 3-1-1 in season opening matches under head coach Shelley Smith after the 7-0 victory over the Bears. The seven-goal victory ties for the third largest margin of victory in school history. The largest margin of victory was set on Sept. 19, 2001 when Carolina defeated South Carolina State, 12-0.

WELCOME TO CAROLINA

Three different newcomers tallied points for Carolina in the first contest of the season. Freshmen Monica Hogan and Felicia Schroeder scored their first career goals with junior college transfer Darcel Mollon adding an assist to Schroeder’s goal. In addition, Schroeder added an assist to a goal from Jessi Swaim. Hogan and freshman Kim Boulos both earned starting nods as well in the opener. Also getting play for the first time in garnet and black were Alex Mouton and Mary Worthen.

PUT IT ON THE BOARD

A majority of the scoring in Friday’s opener came from juniors Jessi Swaim and M.A. Foster as well as sophomore Courtney Cobbs. Swaim had two goals and one assist with Foster and Cobbs both scoring once and credited with two assists. Also scoring for Carolina was sophomore Ashley Kirk, who scored from 40 yards out on a direct kick and also had an assist.

IN GOAL

Sophomore goalkeepers Lindsay Thorstenson and Laura Armstrong both saw action in between the posts on Friday night. Thorstenson got the start and played the first 68 minutes with three saves. Armstrong finished out the last 22 minutes to help preserve the shutout for Carolina.

SCOUTING THE LADY PALADINS

Furman comes to Columbia with a 1-0 record fresh off a 4-0 win at Northern Iowa on Friday night. The win was the first for new head coach Andrew Burr, who has taken over for the Lady Paladins this season. Former head coach Brian Lee is now the head coach at LSU.

South Carolina is 7-2-1 against the Lady Paladins including a 3-1 win last season in Greenville. Jessi Swaim and Amanda Thurber each scored goals in the win for USC and Lindsay Thorstenson earned her first career win in goal.
