Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s soccer team has announced its 2005 schedule that includes eight home games at Stone Stadium beginning with the season opener on August 26 vs. Mercer. The schedule features five opponents that reached the 2004 NCAA Tournament: vs. Furman (8/29), at Clemson (9/9), vs. Auburn (9/23), at Tennessee (10/2), at Florida (10/28).

“We are playing a very competitive schedule and want to prove ourselves in our region and across the nation,” said USC head coach Shelley Smith. “This year for the first time we have two pre-season games that will give us an opportunity to prepare before our opening game. Our non-conference schedule is strong and will be a good test for us before we get into conference play in the SEC.”

The 2005 season also marks the second consecutive year that all 12 SEC teams will compete without exclusion of any one team from the schedule. In previous seasons, four of six teams from the SEC East and SEC West would meet with two schools excluded from the schedule.

Carolina opens with home matches vs. Mercer and Furman before heading on the road for two consecutive road tournaments. The Gamecocks will play Rhode Island and Cal State Fullerton the weekend of Sept. 2-4 in a tournament at Auburn and will return back to the Palmetto State the next week to play in the Carolina Cup on the campus of Clemson University. Carolina and the Tigers will renew their rivalry on the soccer field with a 7:30 p.m. match on Sept. 9 with the Gamecocks also competing against Charlotte on Sept. 11. USC closes out the non-conference portion of the schedule on Sunday, Sept. 18 vs. Miami (Fla.) at Stone Stadium.

South Carolina opens up conference play at home with weekend tilts vs. Auburn (9/23) and Alabama (9/25). South Carolina will also face Vanderbilt (10/7), Kentucky (10/9) and Arkansas (10/21) in home contests.
