Clemson, S.C. – South Carolina women’s team dominated the track as they competed Friday in the Clemson Invitational. The Gamecocks earned two top finishes and three top five spots in the preliminaries.

Leading the Gamecocks on the track Friday was sophomore Karen Wigal who won the 5000m run with a time of 18:05.38. Wigal finished third in the event last week at the Virginia Tech Invitational. Also earning a first place finish was the women’s distance medley relay, which consisted of Tawana Watkins, Faraign Giles, Shay Shelton and Jenny Lake. The relay team combined efforts to win the event with a time of 11:46.23.

For the second week in a row, the women’s team had a strong performance in the 60m hurldes preliminaries. Freshman Amberlee Nesbit improved her time to 7:48 to earn the top spot in the preliminaries, while All-American Alexis Joyce finished fourth with a time of 7:49. All-Americans Khalilah Carpenter and Erica Whipple finished in sixth and seventh places.

Senior captain Tiffany Ross finished second in the 60m hurdles preliminaries with a time of 8.49. Chiquita Martin and Reanna Townsend also finished the event in seventh and 15th places.

In field events, Kemesha Whitmire finished 10th in the long jump preliminaries with a mark of 5.59 meters, while Townsend jumped for 5.09m for a 18th place finish. In the weight throw, Precious Akins finished 14th in the preliminaries with a mark of 16.69. Keri Groover threw a distance of 15.56m for 19th place.

Saturday’s meet schedule starts off with the men’s 60m hurdles finals at 11:00 a.m. and will conclude with the women’s 4x400m relay scheduled for 4:10 p.m. Results will be available following the meet at www.uscsports.com
