Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina opens the outdoor season by hosting the annual Weems Baskin Relays at the Weems Baskin Track and Field in Columbia. Twelve schools are scheduled to compete during the two-day event. Competition begins Friday at 2 p.m. and continue through the day before resuming on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The Gamecocks were successful at last weekend’s NCAA Indoor Championships at Fayetteville, Ark. Highlighted by an individual NCAA Championship by Lashinda Demus and a pair of school records in the men’s and women’s 4×400 relays, South Carolina totaled 21 All-Americans on its way to a second-place tie on the women’s side and a fifth-place tie by the men.

The women’s posted their fourth consecutive indoor top-five finish while the men had their highest indoor finish since placing fourth in 1999.

USC’s women open defense of their 2002 national championship with the Weems Baskin Relays, the first outdoor event of 2003. They were honored last weekend for their final No. 1 indoor ranking in the “Team Power Rankings” announced by the Division I Coaches Association of the U.S. Track Coaches Association.

The Gamecocks were honored with its first poll title during a ceremony at the coaches’ meeting in Fayetteville, Ark., site of last weekend’s NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The No. 1 women’s ranking is the highest finish for South Carolina in the poll while the men’s team finished with a No. 9 ranking, its best finish.
