TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 22 University of South Carolina softball team went 1-1 in day two of the Seminole Challenge. USC fell to Florida Atlantic, 1-0, while shutting out the No. 15 Florida State Seminoles, 4-0, in the Gamecocks’ second game. USC improves to 2-1 on the season.

In game one, Florida Atlantic scored the lone run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Heather Wright, who reached first base off an error by Amber Curtis, would eventually score the game-winning run for the Fighting Owls. Wright was driven home off a sacrifice fly by catcher Callie Piper.

South Carolina’s best chance of scoring was in the sixth inning when they left two on base, Samantha Jennings and Melissa Sandel. Jennings singled to right field while Sandel was walked, advancing Jennings to second.

In the Gamecocks final at bat Nancy Crane, pinch running for Kristin Hall, advanced to third but was unable to score.

Gamecock pitcher Stacey Johnson, posting 11 strikeouts, drops to 0-1.

In game two, pitcher Megan Matthews recorded her first shutout of the season,defeating No. 15 Florida State 4-0. Matthews improves to 2-0 on the season.

In the second inning Debralee Troesh doubled to left field sending Adrianna Baggetta home. Baggetta struck again in the fourth inning with a single to left field which drove in Meghan Cornett for the Gamecocks’ second run of the game.

South Carolina added two more insurance runs in the seventh inning. Crane scored of a single by Jodi Fittro,while Sandel crossed home plate off a sacrifice fly by Aleca Johnson.
