Assistant Sports Information Director

Ayanna Wakefield is in her third year in the Gamecock athletics program as assistant sports information director. Wakefield joined the athletics department in February of 2002 and manages publicity duties for the Carolina softball program and is also the primary contact for the Gamecock volleyball team.

For the past two years, she has spearheaded the national campaign for Cocky, as he was named Capital One's National Mascot of the Year in 2003.

Wakefield joined the Gamecocks after working one year at the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau. Prior to her tenure in the Peach State, she spent three years as assistant sports information director at Auburn University, where she worked with swimming, volleyball, softball and football and coordinated media operations for the 1999 national championship men's swimming team.

Wakefield is a 1997 graduate of the University of Oklahoma, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations. During her time at Oklahoma, she worked as a student assistant in the sports information office with responsibilities in tennis, track and field and softball. In 1996, Wakefield earned the Association of Women in Sports Media Internship/Scholarship for public relations. She did that internship with the NFL's Minnesota Vikings.

Wakefield, born Feb. 18, 1974, is a native of Edmond, Okla.
